Wave period tells you more about how a day on the water will actually feel than wave height does. It is the time in seconds between one wave crest and the next passing a fixed point, and it is the difference between a long, easy roll and a short, jarring ride that empties the cabin and tires the crew.

Periods of 12 seconds or more usually mean organized ocean swell that has travelled a long way from the weather system that made it. Those crests arrive far apart, so a boat has time to rise, settle and recover between them, and even a substantial swell can feel gentle underway. Periods under about six seconds point to locally generated wind waves or chop. The crests are stacked close together and the faces are steeper, so the same measured height turns into slamming, spray and a slow, uncomfortable trip.

Period also changes what happens close to shore. Long-period swell carries its energy deeper through the water column, so it feels the bottom sooner and stands up harder over a bar or in an inlet mouth than short-period chop of the same height. A calm-looking offshore forecast with a long period can still mean a difficult entry on the way home.
