Tournament Location

The fleet leaves from a sheltered bay and fishes open Pacific water at the shelf edge and beyond, so this page reads both ends of the run. The live day-by-day GO / CAUTION / NO-GO cards are up top; here is the map and the latest outlook for each zone.

Inshore

Isla Herradura

9.628, -84.680

The island at the mouth of Herradura Bay, just outside the marina. The bay is a sheltered cove, so the water here is the calm end of the run and the water every boat crosses on the way out from 6am and on the way back before scorecards are due. When it looks rough even here, the shelf edge will be worse.

Sun and Mon are GO; Sat needs careful timing

Isla Herradura — Saturday, Oct 3 · CAUTION

CAUTION: timing matters. Southeast winds of 3-15 knots with gusts to 22 knots build steep, short wind-wave chop for about 3 hours on top of 1.2-1.4 meter SSW seas at 8-second periods. Rain chance is 98% at midnight, so bring rain gear. Forecast confidence is only 65%.

Isla Herradura — Sunday, Oct 4 · GO

GO: any time works. Winds are light at 1-9 knots from the WSW, gusting to 15 knots, with comfortable 1.1-1.3 meter SSW seas at 9-second periods. Showers are possible, with a 72% rain chance around 7:00 PM, so pack rain gear.

Isla Herradura — Monday, Oct 5 · GO

GO: any time works. Northwest winds of 2-11 knots gust to 15 knots over gentle, well-organized 1.0-1.1 meter SSW seas at 10-second periods. Rain chance reaches 82% around 6:00 PM, so bring rain gear if you're out late.

Offshore

Ventiseis

9.359, -84.507

"The 26", a rise near the outer edge of the shelf about 20 nautical miles southeast of the marina, where the bottom starts to fall away to deep water. It is the honest read on the open Pacific the fleet fishes, inside the tournament's 50-mile radius and fully exposed to the long-period southern swell.

Mixed outlook: Monday is the clear go

Ventiseis — Saturday, Oct 3 · CAUTION

Caution. Southeast winds run 5-18 knots with gusts to 24 knots, and a steep wind-wave chop builds over about 4 hours on top of 1.4-1.6 meters southwest seas at 8-second periods. A 98% chance of rain early, so bring rain gear. Plan carefully and expect an uncomfortable ride.

Ventiseis — Sunday, Oct 4 · CAUTION

Caution, depends on timing. Seas are rougher until about 4:00 AM, then settle into a good stretch that holds the rest of the day. Winds are light, 2-10 knots from the south-southeast, with 1.3-1.5 meters south-southwest seas at 9-second periods. About 0.55in of rain is expected, with a 69% chance around 5:00 AM, so bring rain gear.

Ventiseis — Monday, Oct 5 · GO

Go. Any time works for the 12-hour trip. Winds are light, 1-10 knots from the west-northwest, with well-organized 1.1-1.2 meters southwest seas at 10-second periods. A 67% chance of showers early around 3:00 AM, so pack rain gear, and visibility stays 10+nm.

About the Los Sueños Triple Crown

The Los Sueños Triple Crown is a three-leg billfish series fished out of Safe Harbor Los Sueños marina at Playa Herradura on Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast. The 2027 series is the fourteenth Triple Crown: Leg 1 the week of January 18, Leg 2 the week of February 22 and Leg 3 from March 29 to April 3, each with three fishing days, Thursday to Saturday. Around 40 teams fished each leg in 2026, every billfish is released, and the boat with the best combined score across all three legs is crowned champion.

The series is timed to the dry season and the peak of the Central Pacific sailfish run, and most of the fishing happens 20 to 40 miles from the marina. This page reads the two ends of that run: Herradura Bay, where every boat leaves and returns, and the shelf edge about 20 nautical miles out, where the open Pacific begins. Each zone gets a plain GO, CAUTION or NO-GO call, updated every morning from the latest marine model data. It is the same AI rating used in the SeaLegs AI app.

Reading conditions for the Los Sueños Triple Crown

Read the swell, not just the wind. Costa Rica's Pacific coast takes most of its wave energy from the southwest, from storms thousands of miles away, and that swell reaches the shelf edge whatever the local breeze is doing. Herradura Bay is sheltered by its islands, so a quiet morning in the marina says little about what is running 20 miles out. Look at the swell period on the cards: long-period southern swell is a slow, heavy sea that is usually fine to fish, while a short period on top of it makes for a steep, uncomfortable day.

Then read the time of day. The Triple Crown is fished in the dry season, which on the Central Pacific runs from December to April, so long rainy spells are rare. Afternoon is still when any rain and squalls on the Pacific slope tend to arrive, and the lines-out time of 4pm puts the run home in that window. The cards above show when each day's conditions build.

Finally, read the distance. The shelf here is narrow: the bottom passes 1,000 metres only about 20 nautical miles southwest of the bay. That is why the fleet can be in blue water quickly, and why the offshore zone on this page is the one to weight when the two disagree. This page is a planning aid, not a substitute for official forecasts and warnings from Costa Rica's Instituto Meteorológico Nacional.

Los Sueños Triple Crown forecast FAQ

What are the marine conditions at Costa Rica's Central Pacific today?

As of Oct 3, 2026: Isla Herradura — CAUTION; Ventiseis — the shelf edge — CAUTION. Every rating is rebuilt each morning from the latest marine model data.

When is the 2027 Los Sueños Triple Crown?

The 2027 series has three legs. Leg 1 runs the week of January 18 to 23, Leg 2 the week of February 22 to 27, and Leg 3 from March 29 to April 3. Each leg has a captain's meeting on Wednesday evening and three fishing days, Thursday to Saturday, with the awards dinner on Saturday night. Check the official site for any schedule changes.

What are the fishing hours?

Under the published schedule, lines go in at 8am and come out at 4pm on each fishing day, with observers on board by 5:45am. Check the current rules on the official tournament site.

How is the tournament scored?

It is release-only for billfish. Under the 2026 rules, each released sailfish scored 100 points and each released marlin 500 points, and non-offset circle hooks were required with bait. Every release is witnessed by a certified observer. The current year's rules on the official site are the authority.

Where is the Los Sueños Triple Crown fished?

Out of Safe Harbor Los Sueños marina at Playa Herradura. Fish have to be hooked within a 50-mile radius centred on Herradura Bay. Most of the fleet fishes 20 to 40 miles out, where the shelf drops away to deep Pacific water.

Why are January to March good months for sailfish here?

Those months are the peak of the Central Pacific sailfish season, and they fall in the dry season, which runs from December to April on this coast. That combination is why the Triple Crown is fished then.

Which zone should I read?

Read Isla Herradura for the start and finish of the day, and the shelf-edge zone for the fishing. The bay is sheltered, so on a day with a big southern swell the inshore card can look easy while the shelf edge is not. When the two disagree, weight the offshore one.

How often is this forecast updated?

The board is rebuilt every morning from the latest marine model data, and the cards refresh live in your browser. The date stamp above each outlook shows exactly when it was last generated.

What do GO, CAUTION, and NO-GO mean?

GO means conditions are favorable for most recreational boats. CAUTION means marginal — manageable for experienced crews in capable vessels, but check the wind, swell height and swell period closely. NO-GO means conditions are hazardous for small craft and the trip is best postponed. They are a planning aid, not a substitute for official forecasts and warnings.
