About the tide in Wellington
Wellington has the smallest tide of any main New Zealand port, and it is not a small margin. The harbour rises and falls by about a metre on an ordinary day — roughly a third of what Auckland does. Cross to Nelson, 130 km away on the other side of Cook Strait, and the range is nearly three times larger and high water arrives almost five hours later. That mismatch is what makes the strait between them one of the most tidally violent stretches of water in the country.
Wellington runs a semi-diurnal tide, two highs and two lows a day, but the swing is unusually small: across the spring–neap cycle the daily range moves between roughly 0.8 and 1.4 metres, and a typical day is about 1.0 metre. High water sits between 1.5 and 1.9 metres above chart datum and low water rarely drops below 0.5 metres. For most harbour purposes the tide height is simply not the constraint it is further north.
The reason is geography. New Zealand sits close to a point where the main semi-diurnal tide wave largely cancels itself, and Wellington sits close to that point. The same effect that flattens the range here does something far more dramatic next door: high water at Nelson, across Cook Strait, lands about 4 hours 45 minutes after Wellington's, with a range of roughly 1.3 to 3.9 metres against Wellington's 0.8 to 1.4.
Two bodies of water that close, that far out of step, and that different in height mean an enormous volume has to move through the strait twice a day. That is the origin of Cook Strait's reputation, and it is why a Wellington tide table tells you very little about what the water is doing a short distance offshore. Plan a strait crossing around the tidal streams and the forecast, not around the harbour's one-metre rise.
