About the tide in Auckland

Auckland is a city built across two harbours, and they do not share a tide. The Waitematā opens east into the Hauraki Gulf; the Manukau opens west to the Tasman. They are barely a few kilometres apart across the isthmus, and high water on one side arrives roughly three and a quarter hours after the other — with a noticeably bigger swing on the Manukau. The times on this page are for the Waitematā, the city-side harbour.

The Waitematā runs a straightforward semi-diurnal tide — two highs and two lows a day, close to equal, about six hours between each turn. Across the spring–neap cycle the daily range moves between roughly 1.5 and 3.3 metres, so a spring tide moves more than twice the water a neap does. That is a large range for a sheltered city harbour, and it is why the foreshore at Judges Bay or Point Chevalier looks like a different place at either end of the day.

The Manukau side is the part that catches people out. High water at Onehunga lands about three and a quarter hours after high water in the city, and the range there runs larger again — roughly 1.6 to 3.8 metres. A plan made from a Waitematā tide table does not transfer across town. The Manukau entrance also carries a well-known bar, and crossing it is governed by local bar advice and the state of the tide together, not by a tide table alone.

On the Waitematā itself the tide matters most in the shallow upper reaches and the tidal creeks — the Whau, Hobsonville, the Tāmaki River — where the difference between high and low water is the difference between a channel and a mudflat. Out in the Rangitoto Channel the shipping is deep enough not to care, but the tidal stream through the harbour entrance and around North Head is worth having in your head before you plan a crossing under sail.

Auckland tide questions

What time is high tide in Auckland today?

High tide in Auckland today is at 10:08 am (3.2 m) and 10:22 pm (3.3 m).

What time is low tide in Auckland today?

Low tide in Auckland today is at 3:43 am (0.6 m) and 4:02 pm (0.7 m).

What is the tide range in Auckland?

Today's range in Auckland — the difference between the day's highest high and lowest low — is 2.7 m. The average over the next two weeks is 2.6 m, so today is above-average. Range varies through the month on the spring–neap cycle.

Is this week a spring tide or a neap tide in Auckland?

Neither, cleanly — Auckland is mid-cycle this week, with predicted ranges easing toward neap tides. Spring tides bring the largest ranges and the strongest currents, neap tides the smallest, and the fortnightly swing between them runs continuously rather than in steps.

How many tides a day does Auckland get?

Auckland has a semi-diurnal tide: two high tides and two low tides every day, roughly equal in height, about six hours apart.

What time is sunrise and sunset in Auckland today?

Sunrise in Auckland today is at 6:42 am and sunset is at 6:00 pm. The moon is waning gibbous, 80% illuminated.

What tide datum are these Auckland heights measured from?

All heights on this page are in metres above CD (chart datum), the chart datum LINZ references New Zealand tide predictions to. A predicted height of 0.0 m means water at the datum, not a dry bottom — and negative predictions do occur on the biggest spring lows.

How accurate are these Auckland tide predictions?

They are astronomical predictions from harmonic constituents published by LINZ for the Auckland station, the same constituents LINZ computes its own published tide tables from. They account for the motion of the sun and moon but not for weather. Sustained wind, barometric pressure and river flow can all push real water levels above or below the prediction, sometimes by a third of a metre or more in a strong blow.

Is high tide in Auckland the same on the Manukau side?

No, and the gap is bigger than most people expect. High water at Onehunga on the Manukau Harbour arrives roughly three and a quarter hours after high water on the Waitematā, and the Manukau runs a larger range — around 1.6 to 3.8 metres against the city harbour's 1.5 to 3.3. If your day involves both sides of Auckland, you need both sets of times.

Why is the tide range bigger at Onehunga than in the city?

The two harbours face different oceans. The Waitematā opens east into the sheltered Hauraki Gulf, while the Manukau opens west to the Tasman Sea and funnels into a large, shallow basin behind a narrow entrance. That shape amplifies the tide, which is why Onehunga sees roughly half a metre more range than the Waitematā on the same day.

Where do these Auckland tide predictions come from?

They are computed from the harmonic constituents that Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand publishes for the Auckland tide station — the same constituent set LINZ uses for its own published tide tables. We run our own prediction from them rather than reproducing LINZ's tables, and we check the result against those tables before publishing.

Can I get tides and a marine forecast for my own spot near Auckland?

Yes. The free SeaLegs AI app gives tide predictions plus wind, wave and an AI-rated GO / CAUTION / NO-GO call for any spot you drop a pin on — not just listed stations.
