About the tide in Sebastian Inlet

Sebastian Inlet is the only opening to the Atlantic for roughly fifty miles of the Indian River Lagoon, which makes it one of the most tide-dominated pieces of water in Florida. Everything that drains a very large, very shallow lagoon has to squeeze through one narrow cut under the bridge — and the current that produces is the reason the inlet is famous for both its fishing and its reputation for catching people out.

The tide range here is modest — this is Florida, not Maine — but range is not the point at Sebastian. The point is volume through a bottleneck. A lagoon system tens of miles long exchanges water through a cut a few hundred feet wide, so the current at the bridge routinely runs harder than the tide height alone would suggest, and it keeps running for a while after the turn.

That matters two ways. For anglers, the moving water is the whole game: the outgoing tide sweeps bait out of the lagoon and stacks predators in the inlet, which is why snook season and a strong ebb are talked about in the same sentence here. For anyone running a boat through, an ebb against an onshore easterly wind builds a short, steep, breaking sea right in the mouth — the classic Sebastian hazard, and the reason to time a transit for slack or a flood.
