Jacksonville Beach fronts the open Atlantic just south of the St. Johns River entrance at Mayport, on a stretch of northeast Florida coast that runs one of the state's larger tide ranges — commonly four to five feet. For a beach town that is a big number: it is the difference between a wide, hard, walkable sand flat and almost no beach at all.
